Biography

Dr. Serdar Vural received his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering in July 2003 at Boğaziçi University, Istanbul, Türkiye. He later received his PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering in December 2007 at The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA. He is currently affiliated with the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at . He works at the Institute for Communication System (ICS) and Space Institute (SSI). He contributes to both research and teaching in satellite communications and 5G/6G mobile communication networks.

Since January 2010, Dr. Vural contributed to various UK and EU research projects at , on a wide range of topics, including wireless sensor and ad hoc networks, Internet of Things (IoT), software-defined networking (SDN), network functions virtualisation (NFV), mobile network orchestration, and communication system integrations.

Research

Research interests

Dr. Serdar Vural works specifically on software-defined networks (SDN) in the context of satellite networks, IP networks and 5G/6G mobile networks. His research focuses on network management and orchestration, service delivery enhancement, and terrestrial and non-terrestrial network integrations. Dr. Vural develops and manages the SDN infrastructure of 's campus-wide mobile network, connecting its radio network to its virtualised 5G core software. He also focuses on SDN based management of traffic flows in integrated satellite-mobile networks for coverage extension and service reliability assurance.

Supervision

Postgraduate research supervision

Dr. Vural supervises MSc and PhD projects on software-defined networking with applications in 5G/6G mobile networks and satellite communications. The particular research focus is convergence of terrestrial mobile 5G/6G networks with non-terrestrial networks (NTN), focusing on data routing and delivery aspects.

Teaching

My teaching at the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering is centred at mobile network management systems, satellite networks and computer networks.

I lead the laboratory assignments for the EEEM087 Network Planning and Management course, in design and development of the lab assignment, working with the test bed team at 's 6G Innovation Centre. This involves operations with software-defined networking, radio base band unit, and 5G core network, and provides students with an overall understanding of the management aspects of and end-to-end mobile network from a practical point of view. I also teach modulation and coding aspects in EEEM031 Satellite Communications Fundamentals and several topics in EEE3007 Data and Internet Networking courses.

I also participate in satellite communication teaching offerings at Space Institute. This covers a range of topics, including satellite radio link aspects and satellite communication topics for next generation integrated terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks.
