Protecting and enhancing our environment
Enhancing and protecting the environment includes work towards a regenerative future and aims to realign human activity with the health of Earth鈥檚 natural systems (air, water, land, and life). It explores the solutions that restore ecosystems, foster environmental stewardship, and build resilience to climate and biodiversity crises.
黑料社 our research
Protecting and Enhancing the Environment is a transdisciplinary research programme rooted in the belief that humanity must act as a responsible custodian of Earth鈥檚 natural systems鈥攁ir, water, land, and life. We envision a future where human activity is aligned with the health and resilience of our environment, where societal structures, technologies, and cultures support regeneration rather than degradation. This vision spans ecological, social, legal, and ethical dimensions鈥攕eeking to prevent further damage while actively restoring ecosystems for the wellbeing of all species, including our own.鈥
The programme brings together diverse academic expertise and community voices to explore innovative solutions鈥攕ocietal, nature-based and technological鈥攖hat can reconnect people with the environment and drive sustainable change. As part of this effort, we recognise the value of measuring environmental impact to inform targeted interventions and to quantify the positive outcomes of our actions. By combining evidence, inclusive practice, and co-created knowledge, we aim to foster environmental stewardship, build resilience to climate and biodiversity crises, and secure a thriving planet for generations to come.鈥
Thematic areas
- Human-nature relationships and behavioural change: Exploring how cultural values, education, and community engagement can shift behaviours and reconnect people with the environment, using tools from psychology, art, and participatory methods.
- Environmental quality and pollution mitigation: Addressing air, water, land, and noise pollution鈥攊ncluding microplastics, chemical contaminants, and waste鈥攖hrough interdisciplinary research and policy innovation.
- Nature-based and technological solutions for climate and biodiversity resilience: Investigating both organic and engineered approaches to environmental protection and restoration, such as ecological infrastructure, rewilding, sustainable materials, and environmental design.
- Regulation, governance, and environmental justice: Examining the role of legal frameworks, policy guidance, and governance models in safeguarding ecosystems, ensuring equitable access to environmental benefits, and empowering marginalised communities.
- Integrated resource management and sustainable planning: Developing approaches to land, water, and resource use that balance current needs with long-term environmental sustainability, supporting cities, agriculture, and industries in transitioning to net-positive systems.
