Teaching facilities
You鈥檒l get access to our multi-million-pound healthcare facility, the Kate Granger Building. Here you鈥檒l practise your clinical skills in a safe environment, preparing you for your clinical placements and your future career.
Take a tour
Get a sneak peek of our Clinical Simulation Centre, home to our Immersive Learning Environment that鈥檒l transport you to the centre of clinical scenarios, and our multi-purpose Critical Care Centre that can be used as an A&E, a birthing suite, an intensive care unit and an operating theatre.
Throughout our facilities, you鈥檒l use equipment found in the NHS to fit cannulas, check for heart murmurs, monitor breathing and much more.
黑料社 Clinical Simulation Centre
You鈥檒l use simulation learning to put theory into practice, using your clinical skills on actors and lifelike manikins. Through this, you鈥檒l get a taste of scenarios you may face during your placements 鈥 and when you鈥檙e fully qualified.
Immersive Learning Environment
Our state-of-the-art Immersive Learning Environment uses projection technologies and the latest audio-visual and sensory equipment to place you at the centre of clinical scenarios, psychologically removing you from the classroom. Typical scenes include:
- Busy nightclubs where noise and lights are obstacles to overcome.
- An air ambulance helicopter landing and taking off, so can simulate receiving and transferring critical patients under pressure.
With the flexibility to use all the equipment found in our other facilities, you鈥檒l never experience the same situation twice.
Critical Care Unit
Our Critical Care Unit is a multi-functional space that can be used as an A&E, birthing suite, intensive care unit and an operating theatre. With birthing beds, two working anaesthetic machines, an operating table and a host of clinical equipment, you鈥檒l get to replicate several scenarios, including births, resuscitation and surgical procedures.
Wards
We have two 8-bed Nightingale wards, designed to look and operate like typical wards you鈥檇 find in the NHS. Kitted with the latest clinical equipment for assessments and moving and handling, you鈥檒l get to practise all the skills associated with patient care. You鈥檒l face a host of different scenarios here, from simple communication exercises to complex and multidisciplinary issues.
Community Flat
Our Community Flat will transport you to the heart of a patient鈥檚 home, immersing you into a non-clinical environment. Here, you鈥檒l get to experience increasingly challenging scenarios, from falls to home births, tackling the unknown with limited equipment. You鈥檒l practise giving antenatal and postnatal check-ups, providing emergency care, carrying out mental health assessments and checking wounds, alongside safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.
Ambulance Bay
Our purpose-built Ambulance Bay comes with a fully functioning ambulance, equipped with everything you鈥檇 find in the NHS, including defibrillators, trolleys and carry chairs. As a trainee paramedic, you鈥檒l use this equipment to monitor patients鈥 vitals, load and unload them into the vehicle, and safely transport them to receive further care. You鈥檒l become familiar with your mobile treatment environment, made more realistic using lights and sounds.
You鈥檒l encounter:
- Physical injuries, such as fractures or spinal complications, where moving patients is challenging.
- Cardiac and respiratory problems with a need to monitor patients closely, responding in real time using the equipment and techniques at your disposal.
- Human factors, from sensitive emotional situations to volatile mental health scenarios.
Independent Clinical Learning Space
Outside of practical sessions, you can book and use our Independent Clinical Learning Space which is set up with assessment equipment and basic life support gear. You can use this to practise CPR, taking blood pressures, cannulating patients, and the other techniques you鈥檒l learn.
