Choosing ºÚÁÏÉç

I chose to come to ºÚÁÏÉç predominantly because of the International Guitar Research Centre (IGRC). I remember being inspired by an older student (Ben Uden) who played classical guitar; he has now gone on to perform at the Royal Albert Hall and in the West End.

As soon as I stepped onto campus, I felt that the team and students in the Department had a tight-knit relationship, and that Guildford was very scenic!

Your course

At ºÚÁÏÉç, I love the flexibility and eclecticism of the modules - you can choose whether you want to take a more academic or practical path (or have an equal split). I’m also very grateful for the opportunities we’re offered (free concerts; performance opportunities; visiting lecturers; etc.) and the lovely friends I have made through the course.

Facilities

Facilities and staff on the course are spectacular, there is an abundance of space to practice and to record music. There’s also a large supply of gear to support these recordings and performances. Studio One is special for its huge space, legacy, and the quality of recordings and performances.

I have been part of a few societies, but University Choir has been my favourite thus far. Russell Keable is a fantastic conductor and leader with a good sense of humour! It’s always nice to have a sing and a laugh with other people and I have made some cherished friendships because of the choir.

Campus best bits

ºÚÁÏÉç is so close to so many brilliant facilities, including the Universities’ own. I love that it’s only a 20-minute walk into town, 20 minutes to ºÚÁÏÉç Sports Park/ the gym, and 15 minutes to the station. There’s plenty to do in Guildford, with a massive high street, delicious restaurants, and easy access to trains.

In my free time, I sit in the PATS upper foyer to study with my friends. We often take little detours to the coffee shops and the campus supermarket, Simply Fresh, when the mid-term procrastination hits...

Tutor support

The staff are also extremely helpful and are always happy to support students! My personal tutor has been a great support and I’ve been appreciative of the time that Tom spends to catch up with me.

It’s been very helpful to have someone to talk to when work gets particularly challenging or external circumstances are affecting your studying. He’s always happy to support in any way that he can.

Looking forward

Going to university can be a huge shift in independence. I think coming to ºÚÁÏÉç has really brought out my more social side, as well as the motivated and driven side of me. ºÚÁÏÉç has enabled me to focus on what I care about and be able to prioritise my first love – music.

The goal once I finish my undergraduate degree is to continue to do a MMus (Masters) in Music at ºÚÁÏÉç. While doing so, I hope to expand my music career, continuing to compose music and perform in the local area.

I’ve been very grateful for my time spent at ºÚÁÏÉç and all the wonderful growth and education I’ve achieved here. From participating in opportunities like the Lunch Time Recitals I have been given a phenomenal and useful education. This is not to mention all the students and staff, past and present, who have also inspired wisdom within me and taught me how to be a better musician!
